In the year of 1997, a group of committed clinical authors set out on an extraordinary mission. Their aim? To construct a pioneering, evidence-based resource for general practice. They started as a humble research project, covering a mere 20 common conditions to support primary care clinicians with practical diagnosis and management advice.
The Department of Health, moved by the potential of this evidence-based guide, commissioned an expansion. Several years, NICE took the reins, impressed by the team’s clinical authoring capabilities, and approved the outsourcing of clinical content creation to our team.
That was our first step towards becoming a reliable resource for GPs, a proud moment that happened 25 years ago.
What we didn’t foresee then was how this humble book, known as Prodigy at the outset, was destined to metamorphose into a trusted companion for diagnosis and patient management advice in almost every GP practice across England, now recognisable as NICE Clinical Knowledge Summaries (CKS).
As time passed, our team of clinical authors poured their efforts into updating CKS, garnering the reliance of clinicians, with over 7.8 million visits each month spanning over 380 diverse topics.
Our journey took a monumental leap about five years ago. Our ever-evolving user base voiced their need for high-quality CPD content directly linked with our Clarity appraisal toolkit. Cue Dr. Gerry, our Medical Director. Dr Gerry proposed the creation of succinct e-learning modules, based on our trusted clinical content of CKS. The goal? To facilitate high-quality and flexible learning experiences to support busy GPs with their continuous professional development.
And from that vision, iLearn sprung to life!
