Additional 1.7 million people advised to shield

It was announced yesterday (16th February 2021) that an additional 1.7 million people are to be classed as clinically extremely vulnerable and subsequently advised to shield.

New technology has been introduced in relation to people who should shield and the additional health and personal factors criteria taken into consideration now includes:

  • ethnicity
  • deprivation (by postcode)
  • body mass index (BMI)
  • age
  • underlying health issues
  • chronic illness
  • prescribed medications

Letters will be sent by the NHS to individuals who have been added to the shielding list.

This shielding guidance has been extended until 31st March 2021.

Following this update, practices may need to review their COVID-19 Personalised Risk Assessments (C 206) with team members to establish if any additional people in the practice should be shielding.
